Our Favourite Cabinetry Colours

During a consultation I often ask what your likes and dislikes are, how you view your style, your favourite colours to design your home in, etc. I use that information to create Concepts & a Design to reflect you and what you're wanting to feel in your home. Whether that feeling is cozy, tranquility, elegance, lived-in, modern, etc. My job is to tie all your favourite things into a designer look that is still functional.

We've seen it in 2022 and we will continue to see it in 2023, but off whites, creams and beige colours are still very popular for every room and I believe this will be an on-going trend. I do still see white cabinetry being a style we turn to for a timeless look however it will never be like how we saw it in 2018/2019 with white countertop, white cabinetry, and white backsplash. That leads me into the grey colour era. We are slowly moving out of the grey colour era however, I find if a grey colour is something that speaks to the room, light cool grey works best. I find grey is something that is still common in a laundry room or mudroom but with the addition of wood accents to warm up the space. Navy is a colour that really peaked during 2019 & 2020 in cabinetry colours. As an experienced cabinetry designer, I saw this trend fading and fading fast. This is a colour I try not to recommend as it is a colour that will only appreciate accents of gold and wood tones, which limits possibility of unity throughout a home. Blacks have emerged more than ever before, with creating a timeless yet bold feature to catch a person's eye, which truly makes a statement in any room when paired with lighter colours.

Let’s dive into some of my favourite go-to's for cabinetry colours!

Chantilly Lace (Benjamin Moore CC-65)

This is most popular by demand as a timeless, elegant, modern colour. I believe, this is the best white there is to match to any countertop. This is a true white that allows for a clean look to ensure your countertop won't make your cabinetry look dirty. Often when cabinetry is not a true white and the countertop is, it often makes the cabinetry look dinge and gross. Ensure when selecting countertop, you have a sample of your cabinetry colour to refer to.

Most commonly, this colour is used in a kitchen on perimeter cabinets only and a type of wood is then used for the island.

This colour was used in the Bristow Creek Project, for both bathroom cabinetry.

Stonington Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-170)

This is one of my favourite gray's beside Knitting Needles (Sherwin Williams SW-7672). I like this gray because it is cool but can be easily warmed up by adding greenery, wood accents and looks killer with gold hardware. You will see this colour being used in the up-and-coming Alfred Project, which is a laundry room I have designed. The reveal will be coming in May, but for now feel free to watch the process unravel here.

Tricorn Black (Sherwin Williams SW-6258)

I truly believe there must be something black in every room... whether that is a lamp, hardware, plumbing fixtures or cabinetry! When I have the opportunity to design cabinetry in black, my heart flutters. I absolutely love black cabinetry due to how bold it can make a space. It can take any room from boring to spectacular. Tricorn Black is my favourite for cabinetry due to high coverage and the fact that it is actually black. I have used Iron Ore (Sherwin Williams SW-7069) but find it looks more like a dark charcoal gray than a black. This colour pairs very well with antique gold hardware for any room, mudroom, laundry room, kitchen, office, etc.

Schoolhouse White by Farrow and Ball

The mushroom tones are all the talk lately. We started to see these colours come to light in cabinetry design during the first season of Dream Home Makeover with Shea and Syd McGee. Since then, the increase in warm, vintage, lived-in interior design has made a huge impact in the industry to the point where white cabinetry has become rare when working with a designer. Not every home is suited for beige/off white cabinetry as it brings a rustic and antique style which does not align with modern features. Often Shea McGee can be found using colour tones like Schoolhouse, Pale Oak (Benjamin Moore OC-20), Creamy White (Benjamin Moore OC-7) to bring earthy tones into her designs.

My favourite place to use mushroom colours are in a mudroom.

These are some of my go-to's for cabinetry colours, but I love to experiment with new colours as well. Snowbound and Ghosted by Sherwin Williams will be making an appearance in the Quaiser Project which will be making an appearance to Social Media in April! I love to work with and experiment with new colours to be able to give my feedback to future clientele.
