Important Tips When Designing A Laundry Room

Updated: Mar 15, 2023

When designing any room, a big factor to take in is to ensure all areas of the home are cohesive. Obviously, this can be challenging when renovating one room at a time, but by the time all rooms are completed your home should feel balanced and unified.

A laundry room is often a room in our home that gets forgotten. It is just an area that we wash & dry clothes and maybe wash our hands after a hard day’s work. What many don’t see is that just because it is a room in our home that we may not use every day, doesn’t mean it can’t be functional and aesthetically pleasing. In the last 3 years, I have seen many investing into their laundry rooms either for house value, functionally and or because it just needs some TLC. Basement laundry rooms can be beautiful even though it may be located in the furnace room and upstairs laundry can be functional even if it is in a small room!

Let’s run through some basic tips!

Hanging Space

First things first, hanging space is one of the most important accessories in a laundry room. Often, important clothes need to be hung up right away after drying to limit the wrinkles, having a clothing rod would best suit. However, many others have items that cannot be dried in the dryer, they would be looking for a drying rack. Portable drying racks can take up a lot of space, especially when you are dealing with a small room. Having fold down drying rack that can be stored up against the wall, have become very popular due to its functional design.

Folding Area

I don’t know about you, but I don’t know many people that actually fold laundry in their laundry room. Yes, I will always have a countertop over the washer and dryer (if they are front load) as I feel this finishes the design. But if there is a large enough area in your laundry room specifically if it’s on the main floor, instead of creating a counter just for folding, a mudroom and storage area would be more beneficial. I will only design a folding counter if it meets the clients needs. In a recent design, I have added a folding counter section, but this is to accommodate under counter storage for baskets.

Storage

Having storage in a laundry room is the best way to make your space functional. This way laundry baskets, detergents, dryer balls/dryer sheets, aren’t just sitting on the counter. Depending on the laundry room layout, upper cabinets above the washer and dryer or a large pantry cabinet in the room is best. In a large pantry cabinet, this would also allow room for the mop, broom and maybe even your vacuum.

A laundry room is usually one of the most unappreciated spaces in a home. This is simply because it is a place that mess usually piles up, so we ae quick to shut the door. By having proper functional pieces, a laundry room can be and should be a place to show off!
